Waste is one of the biggest drains on household economies. We throw away food, get rid of good clothes, toss out books, toys and kitchen appliances and forgo hobbies all because we can’t find enough adequate storage space. If you’re wasting money by replacing items you’ve previously got rid of through lack of storage, a rethink on how you do things could save money in the long run.
1. The kitchen is one of the most cluttered rooms in the house. We’re all overloaded with small appliances, cooking equipment and crockery that only gets used occasionally. Muddle and confusion follows because there’s no room for everyday items when cupboards are filled with things we don’t use. Have a sort out and pack away any items you don’t use on a regular basis.
2. If you love seasonal sports, such as skiing in winter or water sports during the summer, finding somewhere to store expensive equipment can be a challenge in small modern houses. Self storage units, a solution to overcrowded homes that many people are catching on to, offers a cost effective and secure storage option so you can indulge expensive hobbies without having out of season storage headaches.
3. Kids get bored with toys at an alarming rate. Instead of throwing older toys away, why not pack them up for a few weeks or even months? It’s surprising how fresh they’ll seem when you get them out again, and can save you money on buying new stuff all the time.
4. Changing how we use rooms is sometimes the only option if a permanent spare room isn’t available. For instance, if you work from home or have hobbies that take up lots of space, finding a way to turn a work room back into a guest bedroom (or vice versa) can expand your available space. Choose furniture with a dual purpose, such as a daybed that doubles as a sofa or a fold away workstation you can hide behind closet doors when it’s not in use. Having a folding bed you can whip out for overnight guests is a boon, and when this, along with other occasionally used furniture, is kept in self storage when not in use, they don’t take up valuable space inside the house.
5. Overwinter garden machinery in self storage units to protect them from rust and pests during the wet, damp weather. Many a lawn mower arrives at spring with corroded blades or nibbled wires, forcing expensive repairs or replacements.
Prevention, as they say, is better than cure. If you don’t have space to adequately store personal and household items, constant replacement eats into the budget. Self storage is an option that’s often overlooked. Short term storage rentals (from just seven days), flexible terms that make it easy to move up or down in space if needs change, along with convenient opening hours and locations are just a few of the reasons frugal householders find it a cost effective solution to storage challenges.
