If you have a small bedroom you need to maximise every possible storage space, here’s a quick small bedroom design checklist to work through.
If you are investing in a new bed, why not go for a bed with built in storage, there are loads of great options to suit every style of room. Or if you are already happy with your bed, how about an under bed drawer? You can give your bed a skirt to hide this or choose or paint drawers to match your scheme.
Rethinking your wardrobe space for better storage
The smooth lines of a built in wardrobe can create a feeling of space in your room rather than several pieces of clunky furniture that don’t make the most floor to ceiling space. Chances are storage inside will be much more organised too, making the room as a whole less cluttered. Adding mirrors to this surface will create a feeling of more space too. Not an option for all budgets or if you’re renting though…
A cheaper alternative is to curtain an alcove if you have one, and to shelve and/or add a rail to create a wardrobe inside. Or use over the door hangers and hooks.
Making the most of Desk Space
If you need to fit desk space into your room, be mindful that desks really don’t have to be that deep to do the job. Look at what space or alcoves could be used in the room itself, or landing areas and consider building something – scaffold planks are a very cheap and on trend way to achieve this.
Wall space
There are lots of storage ideas for walls from peg boards, to printers blocks that add interest and keep your small stuff off your surfaces without making it feel as if the walls are coming in on you. Be ruthless about what you keep and have on display and put up some shelves. The best things can help tell your story and lift your mood.
Look out for hooks, clips and storage boxes, the problem solving can be fun once you get into it.
Beside tables are often designed to house small items and can be very impractical, but if you don’t have much space, why not have a chest of drawers or your dressing table double up as your bedside table?
Be ruthless with furniture, investing in something new may make all the difference to your small space. Take a note of room measurements, especially any awkward corners, and keep a copy in your purse or wallet so if you are out and about and happen to spot the perfect charity shop bargain solution, you will know if it fits.
