My Home Rocks – An Open Plan Living Legacy

If you have ever wondered how open plan living might change the way you live as a family, take a look at this beautiful and inspirational open plan space from Jane over at Maflingo, a new blog find packed with thrifty, creative and organised home ideas. Jane’s kindly sharing a couple of other room makeovers with us today, and a wonderful little legacy too, this home truly rocks!

We moved into our 4 bedroom detached house in Nottingham in 2005. Although it’s a relatively new house it has some lovely features such as its double-fronted design, the wide entrance hall and large corner plot. It also has some nice touches like a vaulted ceiling in the master bedroom.

The house wasn’t perfect, though. The kitchen was small for the size of the house, with French doors and large windows further limiting the worktop space and room available for cabinets. Furthermore, the dining room was disconnected from the kitchen, being at the front of the house, whereas the kitchen was at the back.

That’s one of the reasons the previous owners planned to build a single storey extension on the back of the house to create an extended kitchen plus a dining and living area. Unfortunately, we couldn’t afford to follow through with their plans at the time and they lapsed.

However, we feel very blessed, because last year we were finally able to see the extension plans become a reality. I say ‘blessed’ because it exists because of the generosity of my much-loved uncle, who left us a cash gift when he died suddenly a few years ago. He would have loved to see how much we appreciate this space and how much we use it.

I think he’d have loved to sit in the comfy armchair and look beyond the glass doors to our garden, filled with flowers and all kinds of birds, (he would know all the names of them too).

We wanted to recognise my uncle’s generous gift so we framed a couple of first day covers from his stamp collection, with a dedication:

In Loving Memory of William Edmundson, ‘Uncle Billy’. We will look upon these precious things of yours and remember your passions, your hobbies, your kindness. Thank you for this beautiful space.

We love our gorgeous new extension. It’s my favourite area of the house. It’s light and spacious and such a social place to inhabit. We use the space for our hobbies as well and I’ve put all of the kid’s art and craft things into the large cupboards in the kitchen island so they have easy access to them. I also like to sew at the dining table.

My eldest daughter is the baker in our family. She loves having plenty of room in the kitchen to create her delicious cakes and biscuits.

Once the extension was completed, we turned our old dining room into a home office, the recent subject of a two-part blog post. We designed it with two workstations, so Richard and I can both work there. We also managed to find a sofa small enough to fit beneath the window (The Wrafton two seater sofa from Wayfair) so the study is also a place where we can relax.

For our most recent project, we redecorated our youngest daughter’s bedroom. It’s the smallest bedroom in the house so we needed to be clever about maximising the space. We decided to raise her old bed frame (minus headboard) above a row of chests of drawers to make a mid-sleeper bed.

It was a bigger job than we expected, as we hadn’t anticipated the wall crumbling like meringue when we tried fixing a batten to it to support the plywood base for the bed!

We persevered, our marriage survived, and we are delighted with the finished result. Our daughter loves her new bedroom. Her favourite bit is the den we created for her in the ‘dead’ space beneath the bed. You can read all about the trials and tribulations of our daughter’s bedroom on my blog.
