Home gratitude, 6 ways to love your home more

If there is one thing I have learnt from writing a blog about homes and interiors over the last seven years, it is that I am incredibly lucky to have a roof over my head. We’ve all been there, we charge around worrying about trends, with one eye on keeping up with the Jones’ and the other on keeping up with the versions of home we see on social media and in interiors magazines.

Home gratitude, ways to love your home more
It’s easy to lose track of what home really means. To fall out of love with home.

Of course, I’m the first to agree it’s important that our homes reflect us, comfort us and nurture us, I’ve written about the importance of making your home happy to make yourself happy, it really can be done on a budget too!

But sometimes, we need to step right back, take stock and really appreciate what we have. To really love your home, for what it is, security, shelter, warmth and sustenance. Here’s some starting points:

1, Saying grace may already be part of your routine, but whether or not you are religious, taking a breath before diving into your food, to say what your grateful for that day can be the start of a life changing gratitude practice. Taking a moment’s pause can make all the difference to how you enjoy your food too. It’s a lovely way to get kids on board with practising gratitude.

2, When you lie in bed at the end of the day, take a moment to really appreciate the comfort of a warm bed, fluffy pillows, peace and quiet, a warm body, the day’s achievements, the roof over your head – whatever comes to mind!

3, When you wake take a moment to savour the peace and stillness of a new day. Open a door or window and feel the cooler air and appreciate the warmth of home, and the promise of a new day.

4, Hot, running water really is a massive treat. Often the effort of running a bath, finding candles and bubble bath and switching off can seem like hard work, especially when you have crashed on the sofa. When you think about how lucky we are to have hot running water, and how good water makes us feel, it’s a wonder we don’t make bubble baths a daily event. Kids are onto something!

5, Homes provide warmth and sanctuary, from cold, from work, from the rest of the world. Take time to battle the hatches – get cosy, pjs on, lamps or candles on, throws, good book, great film and enjoy time to properly appreciate what home means.

6, When all else fails, when home feels a long way from the homes of magazines and instagram, well there is nothing a 10 minute tidy, followed by a cup of tea and five minutes sitting down in a newly tidied corner can’t fix.

What makes you appreciate home?
