Reflecting on what makes a happy home #happyandhome

What makes a happy home? It’s a quest I have been on for a few months now, I’ve looked at homes in different countries, considered my own home, I have loved reading other people’s posts about finding the happy in their homes. My curiosity has now got the better of me, happy homes has become a research project. In case you missed it, I’ve moved Happy and Home to Tuesday.

An Origin survey found that eating together was top of the list, with laughter coming in second and a tidy home coming in third. Fast wifi, netflix made the list, but so did board games, kids’ pictures on the walls and in jokes. Leaving the home is also central to being happy in it, walks, days out and holidays. I love this list of 50 things that make for a happy home. A happy home comes across as a balancing act between old and new, fun and practicality, inside and outside.

So in honour of that balancing act I am sharing a photo of my office mirrors today, I love how they are both practical – somewhere to dry my hair in the morning – but also reflect some of the old in capturing my printer’s block full of childhood nick nacks. Lego, toy cars, a very worn Paddington Bear, little rubber dolls with 1950s hair, red lips and creepy eyes, finger puppets, sea shells, the clay bed I made when I was 3, one of my earliest memories. It reminds me to be playful, to seek colour and joy in life, and of the wonderful journey I have been on.

Both my children have their own printer’s blocks now too, which makes keeping track of their nick nacks a little easier and more creative too. They are a wonderful display of happy in our home.

Do you have any windows to the past in your home? Shrines to childhood days and play?

What makes a happy home for you?

Last week on Happy and Home

Thanks to Life at 139a, a new lawnmower is always a reason to celebrate, and freshly cut grass really should have made the origin list of 50 things! Eating cake makes for very happy homes, caramel semolina cake from De Tout Coeur De Limousin, is Ema’s mouthwateringly wonderful way to relax at home.
