For decades, wood flooring has been a popular flooring choice for homeowners. They can increase a home’s value and the opportunities to re-sand and refinish are endless. Looking at the wood flooring market, you’ll see that wood floors are made from a variety of species, including oak, which is a popular choice. Oak wood flooring is a commonly used floor covering choice along with maple wood flooring. In addition to oak wood floors, oak wood itself has been used for years as a material of choice for things such as ships, timber framed buildings, furniture, and even barrels to age wines and spirits. Similar to maple wood, oak wood is also used to build instruments, notably drum sets. When it comes to flooring there are several characteristics that make oak a good choice.

First, oak wood flooring is a very durable floor covering. Using the Janka rating system (which measures the resistance of wood to denting and wear), oak wood floors range between 1360 and 1290 pounds-force. This makes it a great choice for busy portions of a home. In addition, oak wood is a very dense material coming in at .75 grams per cubic centimeter. Oak also has high tannin content, which makes it resistant to fungal or insect attacks.

From an aesthetics perspective, oak flooring has a distinct grain pattern that most people seek out because of the prime grades it’s typically given. When a floor is given a “grade” it’s based primarily on how the floor looks, versus the stability, durability, and overall quality. Prime grades for oak floors are often referred to as Clear or Select and Better, meaning the oak floor planks show very little color variation and there are little to no knots visible.

One thing to keep in mind with oak floor coverings is the expense. Because it is species that grows slower and has a beautiful wood grain the cost goes up. Oak floors may be easier on the bank account if you were to go the engineered wood route. In a nutshell, engineered oak wood flooring is built in layers; the core being made of several layers of plywood and the top layer being made of a solid wood veneer. With solid wood floors, you’re limited to your installation areas. Solid wood is sensitive to changes in seasonal humidity, causing the wood to expand and contract. It can only be installed in rooms at ground level or above. Engineered wood is more stable due to the layered cross-ply construction, so it can be installed in rooms below ground level, such as a basement.
