Ever since we renovated the loft last year and updated the bedrooms on the first floor, our eldest daughter has felt a little left out. Her bedroom was updated some time ago and didn’t get touched during this renovation, but it has started to look at little tired, and she was in desperate need of some new pieces for her bed.
In particular, she really needed a new mattress. Hers had been there for about 5 years and was a little thin and quite worn. She was telling us it was uncomfortable and she’d prefer something firmer but soft too. Huh. I knew what she meant though and so was really pleased when Sleeping Duck got in touch and asked us if we’d like to try one of their mattresses in a box.
Whilst she was away visiting her grandparents it gave me chance to give the bed a little makeover. It was looking a bit young and dated, cushions were falling apart and it was still covered in a myriad of soft toys, so this was the perfect chance to give it a more grown up feel.
Sleeping Duck Mattress
So first up is the mattress which arrived all wrapped up in a box. Yep, if you’ve not come across this before, you can now receive your mattress in the post all vacuum packed and ready to unroll and use.
The unboxing instructions are really clear, but to be sure we watched the welcome video explaining exactly what we needed to do.
After unpacking the mattress from the box, we cut through the first layer of plastic to allow it to unroll. Then we cut the final layer to allow air to penetrate and fill the mattress to a pretty normal size.
Sleeping Duck mattresses consist of 3 layers. A bottom layer designed with their 5 Zone Support system and individually pocketed springs. The middle layer, which can be changed at any time, offers the firmness, from a medium to a firm feel. We opted for medium as our daughter is lighter than an adult currently, although we could have changed it if necessary. Then the top layer is all about the comfort and is actually another 3 layers – bamboo fabric, natural latex and memory foam, giving the mattress its soft feeling.
What we immediately noticed is the depth and we certainly weren’t expecting that. at 31cms it’s much deeper than our previous mattress, and needs deep sided fitted sheets.
Putting it on the bed it looked enormous and I wasn’t sure how she might react, but the next stage was to dress it and check out the final look.
Budget Bedding
A young teen girl needs a bed that’s comfortable to sleep in, looks fun and cool, and can be used as a hangout space in the day when friends come to visit.
When I spotted this brilliantly on-trend budget bedding from Primark, I knew she’d love it. Perfect for her bedroom colour scheme, the single duvet set was just a tenner and then another £5 each for the cushions. It works really well with a couple of other geometric cushions she already had, and once dressed the bed looked wonderful. We did have to invest in some new deep sided sheets (we always have M&S, the mister is a stickler for good quality sheets) but now that’s all done, everyone is happy.
A Good Night’s Sleep
The mattress has been in use now for several weeks. At first she thought it was very firm and high, but after a few nights getting used to the difference she absolutely adores it. The top memory foam layer is really soft and moulds to her shape and keeps her cool. She sinks into it but it’s still supportive. We couldn’t be happier. I was really sceptical about receiving a mattress in the post, but the quality is excellent and the sleep experience wonderful.

The single size retails at just under £400, with both UK and European sizes available too.
