How to Make the Most of a View

How to Make the Most of a View
Balcony view

If you’ve got any sort of view from your home, it’s well worth making the most of it. There’s something so calming and inspiring about looking out onto a vista, no matter what it is. It doesn’t have to be a stunning ocean setting for it to be inviting, relaxing and worth looking at.

When we were in the throws of renovating the loft last year, the architect suggested a huge window at one end of the room to make the most of the view. I must admit I was really sceptical. When you’re stood in a dingy, dark old loft space trying to envisage how it will look as a light, bright bedroom, it’s hard to imagine that there’s going to be any kind of suburban view worth looking at.

What I should have done was visit some neighbours homes and see what kind of view they had from their loft rooms, but in the end I went with the architect’s vision and boy, was I glad I did.

Large loft window

Apart from the fact in lets in a tonne of light the view is quite wonderful. From up in our loft I can see for miles across the tops of the houses and trees making me feel like I’m living above everyone else and our neighbours. I sometimes stand and just look, watching the birds and examining the trees. It feels so peaceful from up there.

Window view
Before I had this window I never knew how much I loved a view. Now I couldn’t live without it.

How to Make the Most of a View:

If you like what you see when you look out of your window perhaps you’d like some tips on how to make the most of your view?

  • Consider your window dressing with care. If the window is smaller, blinds would work best allowing you the best view of the outdoors
  • Could you do away with window dressings at all? The best views are those that are uninterrupted and if you’re not overlooked ditch the blinds altogether.
  • Make a statement out of your window and create a focal point by using bold colours and textured fabrics around the space.
  • Design an area around the window to sit and take in the view. Don’t clutter or obstruct the view though. Sometimes a built in window seat is the best option.

Patio Window view

  • I know it sounds obvious but ensure the windows can be opened. Connecting with the outdoor space often means feeling the air on your face too, so being able to open the window when sitting nearby will definitely make the most of your view.

Recently I’ve been putting together some great images on a Pinterest board for Network Veka on this very topic. Rooms with a View is one of my favourite boards from all of my recent collections and if only I had anything half as good as the views from some of these windows.

From stunning floor to ceiling shower windows, to reading nooks looking out on the ocean to city views on small bedroom balconies there’s something inspirational for everyone. Many of these views we might only dream about, and from these we can take some ideas, but some are much more realistic and achievable.

One of my most realistic favourites has to be this garden view from a glass door window. With the curtain pulled right back, and the glass taking up a good portion of the door, we get a wonderful flash of beautiful greenery, helping the connection between the interior and the garden.

It’s little touches like this that we can all hope to accomplish when we design our own homes, touches that often go overlooked but can make a huge difference to the way we feel about our homes.

I’m absolutely loving the tips and ideas for making the most of your view in the Network Veka Look Book too. Check out this section on Rooms with a View for more inspirations and how you can choose the right type of window to enhance your vista.
