How to create extra storage space at home

How to create extra storage space at home, easy ways to reinvent your square feet!
You’ve decluttered already right?

Obviously de-cluttering will not physically give you extra space, but it will give the illusion of more room. Simply clearing away magazines, papers and cluttered surfaces will instantly improve a room. Here’s what to consider next….

Think creatively about your space

Think creatively. Walk round the space and try to see it with new eyes, or ask a friend to. Perhaps there is a cupboard that could be emptied and turned into a craft store or a pull out office, have you got an alcove calling out for a joiner to box in or put up shelves and tuck it all behind a curtain. Would the cupboard under the stairs be less unwieldily if you created more doors? Often we just need a few cleverly placed shelves and storage solutions.

Let the light in

Light colours in your decorating will help to make a room look bigger. Don’t worry this doesn’t have to mean magnolia and white, try soft colours like pale blues and lemon yellow to add some subtle colour. Accessories are a great way to introduce more bold colour.

Reflective surfaces and clear glass also help to make a room look brighter.

Try to enable as much natural light as possible, tie back curtains or try lighter materials. Avoid blocking natural light from a room, you could even look into adding extra windows or roof lights.

Analyse how you really use each room

Have a look at the way you use rooms, often there are better ways to employ the space just waiting to be discovered. Analyse how and when you use different rooms and don’t be afraid to change the use of the rooms around if a space is going to waste. We don’t need big spaces to watch TV and sleep, but when it comes to hobbies and play it is great to have more room to spread out.

Dual purpose room solutions

Combining the use of a room with clever furniture and storage is also a great solution, so a fold down desk and sofa bed for a guest room/office. Or big rattan hampers to stow toys in a dining/playroom. Long rooms can be split in two with room dividers, great for an open plan living room space or a bedroom shared by siblings. There are lots of clever furniture solutions out there waiting to be discovered and they can be much cheaper than knocking down walls or moving!

Loft and cellar conversions

If you have tried all these then, although loft and cellar conversions are more expensive and disruptive, they can dramatically increase your space and be the difference between moving and staying put.

Get outdoors more!

Sometimes all we need of course is to spend more time outside the house to appreciate the cosiness of home!

How have you created more space in your home?
