My husband keeps suggesting home improvements with high returns to add value to our home. He swings from kitchen extension to loft conversion but I worry we won’t make back our money. I came across this this infographic from Abbey Windows which looks at some of the home improvements that can be financially rewarding for home owners and was quite surprised at some of the findings.
Well I think the conservatory or replacement windows must be the way to go! I really thought adding a new kitchen or bathroom and certainly a loft conversion would add value to a house. Turns out to just be an urban myth!
I do believe home improvement TV shows have a lot to answer for. They can make it look like all you need to do is change the carpets and paint the wall white , add a new kitchen and a pretty bunch of flowers and you will be up thousands on your house value. I know that makes for good TV and is meant to be inspiring but actually it is misleading. According to this research this doesn’t seem to be the case at all!
I found the energy efficiency savings the most intriguing. 45% savings on a homes energy efficiency by having the right doors is HUGE saving! and the fact that 23% of heat loss through a home is through windows really shocked me.It is well worth having decent windows are doors isn’t it!
This is the kind of useful financial information we should be taught in schools..and have to hand when we buy a house. It is so much more helpful than relying on misconceptions gleaned form TV shows don’t you think!
It’s so handy to know about home improvements with high returns and could really steer your decision making. Improving your home should be both a pleasure and an investment.
