Glue Down Vinyl Floors From GoHaus

Glue down vinyl plank flooring is a dry back vinyl plank material that is adhered to a subfloor using water-resistant vinyl floor glue. Due to its water resistance, glue down vinyl flooring is excellent for installation in numerous settings, including below grade rooms and rooms such as the kitchen and bathroom. A glue down vinyl plank floor can also be installed on multiple subfloors, just as long as the subfloors are prepared according to installation instructions from the manufacturer. The beauty of glue down vinyl flooring is that it is a resilient material, meaning it can withstand most foot traffic and wear it will experience over the years.

Utility vs. Pro

GoHaus offers two forms of glue down vinyl plank flooring: Utility and Pro. The difference between the two boils down to three factors: plank length, wear layer thickness, and overall plank thickness. Our Utility glue down vinyl plank is a residential grade product. It measures 37” in length, 2mm in overall plank thickness, and features a 0.1mm wear layer. The Pro glue down vinyl plank is suitable for residential and light commercial use. It measures 48” in length, 3mm overall plank thickness, and features a 0.5mm wear layer.

As you research and plan to purchase new flooring for your upcoming flooring project, it is important to take into consideration the installation recommended for the floor you are looking at. Installations can be done several ways, depending on the type of floor coverings. With vinyl plank flooring, you can install by either click and lock system or glue down installation. Glue down installation vinyl plank flooring is a popular choice for the do-it-yourself crowd; it saves you from having to spend money on hiring a professional installation team, and glue down installation vinyl plank floors are durable and extremely realistic when compared to real wood or stone tile.

Let’s talk about the ‘how’ in ‘how to install glue down vinyl plank flooring.’ As previously stated, glue down vinyl plank flooring is DIY-friendly. The important thing to keep in mind with all flooring, including glue down installation vinyl plank flooring, is the subfloor preparations necessary before beginning your project. The last thing you want to have is poorly prepared subflooring that will show through in the final flooring result. In order to prepare your subfloor properly for glue down installation vinyl plank floors, you must do the following:

  • Concrete subfloors must be flat; dry; free of dust, powder or flaking; and free of any residual curing compounds or adhesives from the previous floor.
  • Wood subfloors should have a finished thickness of at least 1” and should have 18” of well ventilated airspace underneath. You do not want to install glue down vinyl flooring over plywood that is laid directly on top of a concrete slab.

Glue down vinyl floors themselves need to be prepared properly before installation as well. This means allowing the vinyl planks to acclimate to the room they will be installed in for at least 24 hours ahead of time. During this time the room that the glue down vinyl planks are being installed in should be heated to normal living conditions before, during, and after installation.

After the subfloor is prepared and planks have properly acclimated, you need to create what are known as “starter boards.” Simply take a tape measure and fine tip black marker to mark cuts at 6”, 12”, 18” and 24” on the backside of a few planks. Once marked, use a utility knife to cut at the markings. These starter boards guarantee the proper staggering between vinyl planks.

Before you start the glue down vinyl plank installation, meaning no glue should be applied to your subfloor, loosely lay vinyl planks down to ensure proper pattern and plank variation.

Next is the fun part: laying down the glue. We also always encourage people to use the glue products recommended by the manufacturer. The best glue for vinyl plank flooring, however, is one that acts as a water barrier. This feature is especially helpful in situations when installing glue down vinyl plank on concrete, such as in a basement. Refer to the glue manufacturer’s instructions for the right size trowel to use. Apply glue in small, workable sections so that glue does not completely dry out. Continue applying glue and laying planks until your room is complete.
