If this Christmas you are having guests over to stay, it’s important to think about where they are going to sleep and the room they are sleeping in. So in this post I am going to give you some handy hints to follow, so that both you and your guests get a good night’s sleep this festive season.
Decluttering
Step back and look at the space. Day-to-day it may be the room that you store last season’s clothes, use as your office, even where you keep the huge collection of shoes you own – or is that just me? You need to look at the room with fresh eyes and try to rationalise the contents. Buy cheap plastic boxes, or large cotton bags, spend a couple of hours to take away any unnecessary clutter and store it away. Whilst doing this, you need to make sure there is drawer or hanging space, if possible, for your guests clothes, again try to store away some of yours to do this.
The Bed
Fresh bed linen can make a huge difference to the room. Guest staying over can also be the perfect opportunity to treat the room to new pillows and a duvet, or to get them laundered. How about dressing the guest bed in crisp plain linens, but adding a pillow or a bedspreads in berry colours to give it a warm and welcoming festive feel.
If you are short on space but need a double bed, I would recommend investing in a single bed with a pull out trundle that can be stored underneath when not in use. So giving you the space and flexibility all year round. There are some lovely designs available that could be dressed to feel more like a day bed, here is one of my favourites from Beds on Legs. Or how about a double ottoman bed, giving you extra storage underneath to squirrel things away.
The Finishing Touches
Water by the bed, a small posy of flowers, and fresh towels will make your guests feel that you have really made an effort and thought of them. I also make up a pack of toiletries for guests to use. It’s a great excuse to use up all of the lovely samples that you have collected throughout the year. A night-light or bedside light is also important, as it can be difficult for people to negotiate their way back to bed in an unfamiliar house. Make sure there is also a spare socket for your guest to charge their phone. All of our bedrooms have blackout blinds, and I can really recommend them for a guest space, the last thing you want is for them to have been woken up early because of the light.
So these are my suggestions for making a guest feel welcome over the festive season. What do you think, are there any you could add?
