There is something comforting about enamelware. We have an enamel water jug in the kitchen that always makes me feel at home, there’s an enamel mug on the worktop full of pens and I always pick the enamel colander over the sieve, although it is rusting and I am contemplating turning it into a hanging basket or even a lightshade (still haven’t bought one for my office!) Our red enamel roasting tins always warm up a Sunday and the vintage style laundry box means we don’t have to look at modern day washing powder packaging.
Enamelware became popular in the 19th century, when manufacturers of kitchen items like pots and pans coated everything from heavy cast iron to lighter steel with enamel. Enamel is simply powdered glass fused to metal. White was popular as it had a clean appearance and the coloured rims give enamelware an edge in more ways than one – there is something so irresistable about the blue and white combo!
There is some gorgeous modern enamel, styled on vintage lines, but without the cracks and rust of the originals. These are my favourites. Do you have any enamel favourites in your home?
