It’s that time of year again when students all over the country start packing up for the journey back to Uni. If you’re just starting out it can be a daunting time, particularly if you’re concerned about where you’ll be living and what you need to take with you. Even if you’re a returning student you’re living accommodation may be different this year and so the pieces you need to pack need consideration. That’s why I’ve put together a list of easy update for your dorm room that Uni students will need.
It’s not easy making a dorm room or Uni digs comfortable but there are things you can do to make them more cosy and homely.
7 Easy Update for your Dorm Room:
#1 Make a Checklist
For any kind of home update, including your Dorm Room you’ll need to plan. See if you can get hold of room dimensions and layout before you go to help you plan what you need and where you’ll put it. Create a Pinterest board for ideas and if you’re working to a budget start a spreadsheet to list out what you need and what it’s going to cost.
#2 Consider Your Options
Updating your dorm room or uni digs will be so much easier if you’ve identified exactly what it is that’s important to you. Is it that you want a creative writing area, or maybe you’re all about having a cosy hangout space, or maybe it’s food and cooking? Ensure you’re clear on this before you go, so you make the most out of your space.
#3 Storage is King
Oh yes, storage is definitely going to be your friend whilst you’re at Uni. Keeping your room, tidy, organised and clutter free ensures that you make the most of the room, but also keeps you more on track to attend your classes and feel inspired to do your work. Think clothes storage, laundry, storage for books, toiletries, shoes and so much more.
#4 Decoration
I know that you can’t always hang things on the walls but check if you can use command 3m strips. They’re removable and make no damage at all, allowing you to hang pictures and hooks with easy. Failing that do you have shelves? Think about displaying art, photos and even noticeboards/clipboards on them to help you stay organised and keep your room looking cool.
#5 Shopping Haul
Once you’ve made your list and done your research take yourself off to just one or two shops. Better still why not hop online. Lots of stores are really geared up for students now. Try IKEA, Tiger, Matalan, and more for down to earth yet stylish bits that won’t break the bank.
#6 Light it Right
Get the lighting right and you’ll easily create a great space no matter how big or small. If you’ve managed to get hold of the floor plan and a contents list you’ll know what kind of lighting is available to you. Add to it. Bring in extra lamps and even change the lightbulbs to give your space a more homely feel.
#7 Plants
They’re the easiest thing to use to brighten up a room, plants will really change your space. You might worry about looking after them (if that’s the case invest in faux versions!) but a bit of water here and there and you’ll be fine.
